The Safer Internet Centre of Moldova is supported by the European Union.

The Safer Internet Centre of Moldova (SIC Moldova) will be co-funded by the European Union over the next three years through the Digital Europe Programme, marking an important step towards strengthening the national child online protection system and bringing the Republic of Moldova closer to European standards for digital safety. The project “SIC Moldova – Empowering Children to Learn, Explore and Stay Safe Online” has been selected for funding under the Digital Europe Programme.

Through this project, we aim to expand and strengthen the activities of the Safer Internet Centre of Moldova so that every child can learn, explore and use the internet in a safer environment. Over the next three years, the project will further develop essential information, counselling, reporting and youth participation services, while also contributing to the alignment of national policies and legislation with the European Union acquis in the field of child protection in the digital environment.

Implemented by the International Centre „La Strada”, the project will reinforce the four core pillars of the Safer Internet Centre of Moldova:

  • the Information and Awareness Centre for Online Safety;
  • the SigurOnline Counselling Service;
  • the Hotline for reporting online child sexual abuse material (CSAM);
  • youth engagement and empowerment in the development of digital safety initiatives and policies.

As part of the project, a wide range of multimedia educational resources and information materials will be developed for children, parents, teachers and professionals. In addition, nationwide awareness campaigns, teacher training programmes, youth activities and innovative initiatives will be organised to promote digital skills and the responsible use of technology.

A key focus of the project will be the further development of support services. The SigurOnline Counselling Service and the Hotline for reporting illegal online content will be strengthened to provide specialised assistance to children, parents and professionals in cases involving cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, online-related mental health concerns and other emerging digital risks. At the same time, the mechanisms for identifying and removing online child sexual abuse material will be enhanced, while efforts will be made to support the adaptation of the national legislative framework to address new challenges arising from artificial intelligence-based technologies.

The project “SIC Moldova – Empowering Children to Learn, Explore and Stay Safe Online”, co-funded by the European Union under the Digital Europe Programme, is implemented by the International Centre La Strada in coordination with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Ministry of Education and Research, the General Police Inspectorate, and in partnership with other public authorities and private sector stakeholders.
